Driving Games

Driving Games

Keeping everyone in the vehicle occupied when you’ve got a long drive ahead can be a big challenge. And once you arrive, whether it’s night time or a spot of bad weather, you can’t always do the fun, outdoorsy things you had planned. All families have their own ways of ensuring that everyone keeps smiling on a trip away – but sometimes you need to make your own fun. Travel games are perfect for times like these, so here’s a few ideas for your next camping adventure.

Eye spy

The old classic. The person who’s turn it is picks an object they can see and says: “Eye spy with my little eye, something beginning with…” (whatever letter of the alphabet it starts with). Everyone else in the car has to try and guess what it is and the person who guesses correctly then has a turn.

For younger children, try an easier version by using colours instead of letters of the alphabet.

An easy word gameChoose a theme such as animals, places or food. Someone starts with a word that relates to the theme. The next person then has to find another word in the same theme that starts with the last letter of the previous person’s word. So if the topic was animals it could be:

Monkey… Yak… Kookaburra… Antelope… Echidna… and so on…

Number plate word gameIn turn, everyone uses the letters from a number plate they see to make up a crazy animal (or other equally fun thing).

So for example, a number plate that was HSE-584 could be: a Hairy Squishy Elephant!

Number plate number gameFor this game, someone will need to be the ‘scorer’ and have paper and a pencil. One at a time, as you pass cars, or cars go past, each person takes the last number from the number plate and the scorer writes it down under their name. The next time this person has a turn a new number is added to the first number, and so on. The winner is the first person to reach a certain number (eg. 50 or 100).

On my last 4x4 adventure I took...Everyone in the car takes a turn at this game. The first person starts by saying… “On my last 4×4 adventure I took…” and completes the sentence with an item they might take starting with the letter A. The next person has a turn and repeats the phrase, including the first person’s word, then adds their own starting with B. “On my last 4×4 adventure I took an APPLE and a BULL BAR.”

This continues all the way through the alphabet and can get quite tricky later on but is a lot of fun.

Count the carsEveryone chooses a colour and the number of cars they think they will see in that particular colour before reaching a designated spot or town. Eg. I think we will see 17 red cars before we stop for lunch. The winner is the person who has guessed the closest to their chosen number when you reach your destination.

The FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa
11 June 2010 to 11 July 2010

If you are planning a trip to South Africa for the World Cup and you want your trip to be something different from the usual hotel or bed & breakfast experience, take a little time and see what we have prepared for our guests. If you are going to visit Africa, we think you should make it a REAL African experience. Hotels and other formal accommodation are pretty much the same the world over. Neat little rooms, canned air and lots of pressure to conform to “standards”. We think there is a need for an alternative to this conventional approach.

There are many stadiums to visit in order to watch the various fixtures, so we have identified a location which is pure natural Africa and within easy travelling distance of five of the major stadiums. This unique venue will provide superb tented or caravan accommodation, allowing you to touch and feel the true spirit of Africa, whilst enjoying one of the worlds greatest sporting spectacles.

You will be able to come and go as you please, enjoy eating outdoors and letting your hair down without the fear of disapproval from anyone. Our facilities are stunning in their natural beauty, away from the normal city concerns of safety and security and can be managed on a self catering basis or you can choose to partake of the on-site catering, or a choice of some splendid local restaurants. You will find the best of Al a Carte and the full spectrum of fast foods available within a short travelling distance, even on your way to and from the games. With our offer the choice is truly yours, do your own thing or let us provide from our on site facilities.

Your accommodation provides for four people sharing, so you and the guys can share this great adventure. When you settle down for the night you will do so listening to the sounds of the African bush, the air will be crystal clear and you will see more stars than you ever thought possible. Eating outdoors is a relative statement, you will find a large thatched Boma in which to eat if you so choose, here adjacent to the Bar you will be comfortable regardless of the weather, be it wet or hot. Here you will also have the opportunity to socialise with the other guests or just enjoy your own company, there is lots of space to do just as you wish.

Try before you buy

Say, “TRY before you buy!”

Big Five 4×4 Caravan and Trailer Rental

You THINK you want to buy a caravan, but you’re not 100% sure. The wife isn’t convinced that she’d enjoy a week in the bush in a little fibreglass home. And you’re not sure if your car will cope with towing a caravan if you do buy one. You um and you ah, but you just can’t make up your mind.

You go and look at caravans at the local dealer, and return weekly for months, trying to decide, and to convince your wife, but without much luck. You don’t want to make a mistake that could cost you a small fortune.
You wish you could just try one out for the weekend.

You obviously haven’t heard of Big Five 4×4 Caravan and Trailer Rental. The company have fully equipped off-road and road caravans, and off-road trailers, for rental. The company has been going for four and a half years, and is owned by Wouter Gerber, of Gerber 4WD.

Wegry

Dankie Wouter

Die middag voor on weer ‘n ent gaan ry. Ek kon nie genoen kry van die bos en die dier nie! Toe ons laat die middag terugkom by die kamp, se een van die bure dat iemand by die sleepwaentjie gewerk het.

En raai at – ‘n splinternuwe hak!

Drive Out

Published in DRIVE OUT magazine FEB-MAR 2009 (page 11)

Thank you, Wouter

In a country where people get extremely frustrated with poor service, I would like to share the following to show all isn’t lost yet.

In June last year, a group of us went to the Okavango Delta and I rented a trailer from Gerber’s 4×4 – Big Five 4×4 in Kempton Park for this holiday.

Within the first kilometer from home, the coupler became unhitched for the first time. As we were novices, we thought it hadn’t been hitched properly.

Everything went well until we had to master Moremi’s dirt roads. Here the coupler jumped off twice. It was then we saw the coupler was totally worn out on the inside. Travelling at snail’s pace, we only reached Xakanaxa late that night.

One of the lodges had a welding machine plan. Meanwhile, I contacted Wouter Gerber (thanx to the lodge’s satellite phone) and he promised they would fix the problem before we had to drive on, which was in three days’ time.

The afternoon before our departure we went for another drive – I could not get enough of the bush or the animals.

When we got back to camp late that afternoon one of the neighbors told us someone had been working on our trailer.

And guess what – we had a brand new coupler! They had probably just shaken their heads about our temporary effort, because everything had been neatly fixed and cleaned.

We had no further problems.

Thank you Wouter and your team for this excellent service.

Danie Senekal, Alberton

(Gerber’s 4×4 now test the coupler beforehand, to ensure everything is right.)
